What are Your Motives?
/By Doreen Szeto
Recently, my devotional had a topic about motives. The week focusing on motives caused me to stop and examine my own motives. My motives of going to school and getting good grades is to accumulate knowledge and wisdom and make new friends. My motives of buying presents are to keep me focused on giving to others. I remind myself that because I give something doesn't mean I will receive something in return.
But the thing that caused me to stop and really scrutinize my motives was my motives of being a Christian and going to church. Was I simply a Christian because I wanted eternal life, or did I truly believe? Did I go to church to spend time with my friends or to learn more about God and focus on Him? It was time to stop and re-examine my motives and to straighten them out. Afterwards, I decided on solutions to help me keep my motives and my heart pure. It has really turned my feet back in the right direction on my road to eternity.
Do you have the right motives? Have you stopped to examine them lately?
Maybe you can stop and look closely at them, too. We should all work on living with pure hearts and pure motives.
"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."
Psalm 51:10
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men"
Colossians 3:23
